Marc Perkel: Stem national debt by letting tax cuts for wealthy expire
Dear Editor: Although Republicans have of late been making a lot of noise concerning the growing national debt, we liberals are concerned about it as well. Thats why the tax cuts for the rich need to expire. Its not a tax increase, its taking away a tax cut for the rich that they never should have had in the first place.

Most of the news reports concerning New York Rep. Charles Rangel's alleged ethical violations have referred to the problem the Democratic Party might face in the fall elections if he forces a public trial in the House on the 13 allegations.

Your July 28 editorial concerning Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina's reserves raised the issue of whether the size of those reserves contributes to rising premium costs.
Bank overdraft rules change
On July 1, new rules went into effect concerning overdrafts on debit or ATM cards. Under the new rules, your bank must have permission from you to choose how it will deal with an overdraft. In the past, banks automatically enrolled you in a standard overdraft program when you opened an account with them. Now, you have to opt in.
Schilens sits out practice with sore foot
The Oakland Raiders offense never really recovered after starting receiver Chaz Schilens went down with a broken left foot in training camp a year ago. That's why it was mildly concerning when Schilens had to sit out practice Friday because of soreness in that same foot. Coach Tom Cable said there's no further damage to the foot but that it will have to be managed throughout camp.
Scheme concerning widening of I-10 in Jefferson lands four in jail
A former Department of Transportation employee was sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay more than $57,000 in restitution by a U.S. District Judge Thursday. Three other people that court documents say were involved in inflating the price of contracts and splitting the profits were also sentenced.
