Description: Serine/threonine-protein kinase VRK1 is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the VRK1 gene.. This gene encodes a member of the vaccinia-related kinase (VRK) family of serine/threonine protein kinases. This gene is widely expressed in human tissues and has increased expression in actively dividing cells, such as those in testis, thymus, fetal liver, and carcinomas.

Description: VRK1 (VRK Serine/Threonine Kinase 1) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with VRK1 include Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia, Type 1A and Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia Type 1.Among its related pathways are Nuclear Envelope Reassembly and DNA Damage.Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include transferase activity, transferring phosphorus-containing groups and protein serine ...

Link: https://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/gene/VRK1

Description: The VRK1 gene provides instructions for making a protein called VRK serine/threonine kinase 1. This protein is active in cells throughout the body. VRK serine/threonine kinase 1 plays a critical role in directing cell growth and division.

Description: VRK1 was also found to have sequence identity (62% over 481 nucleotides) to a database EST. Conceptual translation of the EST predicted a protein of 508 amino acids that, like VRK1, had similarity to B1R kinase. The authors designated this gene VRK2 . Northern blot analysis showed that expression of both VRK1 and VRK2 is widespread and elevated ...

Description: Serine/threonine kinase involved in Golgi disassembly during the cell cycle: following phosphorylation by PLK3 during mitosis, required to induce Golgi fragmentation. Acts by mediating phosphorylation of downstream target protein. Phosphorylates 'Thr-18' of p53/TP53 and may thereby prevent the interaction between p53/TP53 and MDM2.

Description: Gene Effect: Outcome from DEMETER2 or CERES.A lower score means that a gene is more likely to be dependent in a given cell line. A score of 0 is equivalent to a gene that is not essential whereas a score of -1 corresponds to the median of all common essential genes.

Description: Vaccinia-related kinase 1 (VRK1) is a pro-proliferative nuclear kinase. Mice engrafted with VRK1-depleted MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells have been shown to develop fewer distal metastases than controls, suggesting VRK1 might play a role in cell migration, invasion, and/or colonization. In work described herein, we investigated the impact of VRK1 overexpression on human mammary epithelial cells.

Description: VRK1 is widely expressed in proliferating cells, normal and tumoral. It is not present in quiescent or differentiated cells that do not divide in human biopsies. Localisation: Subcellular localisation varies depending on cell type and growth conditions. Most commonly VRK1 is expressed and detected in the nucleus, excluding the nucleolus.

Description: VRK1 regulation of NBS1 contributes to the stability of the repair complex and permits the sequential steps in DNA damage response. VRK1 is a novel chromatin component that reacts to its alterations and participates very early in DNA damage response, functioning by itself or in cooperation with Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated Proteins.
